We hear lots of talk about draw odds in Texas Holdem. In a No Limit game, pot odds are an important part of any good player’s game. Calculating if your hand has a high enough percentage to win, compared to a bet, takes a while to learn and master. But what about draw odds in Limit Holdem, where the betting is controlled? How important are pot odds in a Limit game of Holdem?
In a Limit game it’s easier to get pot odds on your hand. There are often multiple players seeing the flop, and any following bets present good odds for just about any hand that can be drawn for a higher one. With three other players in the hand, draws like flushes and open-ended straights will be getting great odds to draw on if there is only one bet. So good, in fact, that it’s not a bad move to raise these draws to mask your hand and to see if you can pick up the pot right there.
Implied odds also increase in Limit Holdem because it’s likely that more players will call one bet, looking to hit on the next card. You can assume that when making your call. That’s why they call it "no-foldem-Holdem"; players stick around more than they should in this game because the odds are so good.
The game is best played by recognizing the type of player you’re in a hand against and playing the player instead of the cards. Draw odds will almost always be there for you, unless you have nothing, but that doesn’t mean you keep drawing out every hand. Try and put your opponent on a hand, then you can stick around with good draws and muck the long shots.
